The History of H.E.R.B.I.E. from the Fantastic Four

Introduction

When it comes to the Fantastic Four, most fans think of the iconic quartet: Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing. However, there’s another member who has played a significant role in their adventures—H.E.R.B.I.E., but who is this lovable robot? Let’s dive into the fascinating history of this unique character.

Creation and Conception

H.E.R.B.I.E., which stands for Humanoid Experimental Robot, B-type, Integrated Electronics, was initially created for the 1978 animated series, The New Fantastic Four. The character was designed by the legendary duo Stan Lee and Jack Kirby to replace the Human Torch, who was unavailable for the series due to separate licensing issues. It appears that Marvel had licensing issues with some of its characters even back then. At the time, Marvel had licensed the rights to use the Human Torch character to Universal Studios, which was planning to create a live-action series featuring the Human Torch. Because of this licensing agreement, the creators of the animated series couldn’t include Johnny Storm (the Human Torch) in the show. Contrary to popular belief, the Human Torch wasn’t excluded due to fears of children imitating his fiery abilities.

Introduction to Comics

H.E.R.B.I.E. made his comic book debut in Fantastic Four #209 in August 1979, thanks to writer Marv Wolfman and artist John Byrne. In the comics, H.E.R.B.I.E. was created by Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) and Master Xar of the Xandarians to assist in their search for Galactus. However, the robot was secretly controlled by the villain Doctor Sun, leading to a dramatic storyline where H.E.R.B.I.E. sacrifices himself to save the team.

Evolution and Role in the Fantastic Four

After his initial storyline, H.E.R.B.I.E. was rebuilt and continued to serve the Fantastic Four in various capacities. He often acted as a caretaker for Franklin Richards, the son of Reed and Sue Richards, and provided comic relief with his quirky personality. Over the years, multiple versions of H.E.R.B.I.E. have appeared, each bringing their own charm and utility to the team.

His endearing personality and mechanical abilities have made him a fan favorite.
